The Speaker of the Council, Councillor Claire Potter, invited a small group of volunteers from Hackney Winter Night Shelter to a reception to thank them and acknowledge their invaluable contribution to the borough’s homeless population.

Representing over 600 night shelter volunteers, 20 volunteers and the Charity’s small staff team attended the Town Hall event on Thursday 10 April.

After a warm welcome by the Speaker and Cllr. Rebecca Rennison, the group spoke about their experience of the past winter, the values of the shelter, which started over 20 years ago, and its ethos of hospitality that still exists to this day.

The group also highlighted the support that Hackney Winter Night Shelter receives from the wider, hugely diverse Hackney community - from schools, colleges, Guides and Brownies, churches, community groups to football clubs and DJs, as well as the many local businesses who help in so many ways.

After having a few “nibbles” and drinks in the Speaker’s Parlour the group enjoyed a fascinating tour of the Town Hall being shown around the various chambers and vaults, learning a little about the history of the Council.

Cllr Clare Potter, the Speaker of Hackney, said: “I am honoured to be able to thank volunteers and staff from the Night Shelter team in a small way through this reception at the Town Hall. The work they do is invaluable to our community and it was enlightening to hear the stories of how the team have helped some of our most vulnerable residents find a warm place for the night and even turn their lives around completely.”

Andrea Daniels, Chair of the Trustees, commented:  “We really do appreciate this kind gesture by the Speaker and the recognition of the Council of the work and dedication of our volunteers in reaching out to the most vulnerable in our community”.
